Unlocking a Master
After a master file has been recorded, it is possible make changes to two types of metadata in the master file:
- Program Metadata
- Panning and Size Metadata
Program metadata includes FFOA values, downmix and trim metadata, input configuration group names and assignments, and binaural metadata distance settings. Program metadata can be changed without rerecording the entire master. These types of change are typically made after reviewing the master file to adjust and improve the Re-rendered downmixes and the binaural listening experience and/or to assist in the organization of the master files by creating custom channel-based Re-render groups.
Program metadata can be changed by unlocking the master file, making the necessary changes with the transport stopped, and relocking or closing the master file. Any changes are applied to the full duration of the master file.
In contrast, making changes to Object panning and size metadata requires punching in to record over an existing master file. Punch-ins also re-record audio. The DAW output configuration and mapping to the Renderer and the input configuration of the opened and unlocked master file must be identical to allow punch-ins. If they are not, recording will not be allowed and an error dialog will appear. Punch-ins are performed using the same workflow as the initial recording, with the Renderer synchronized to incoming LTC, and using Record In/Out points for accurate punch-in timing and duration. Manually punching in and out is also supported using the record button.
Punch-ins are active on all inputs. Individual Bed or Object inputs cannot be selectively armed for record. Punch-ins, whether manual or using the Record In/Out settings, must start within the timecode range of the existing master file.
Note that only masters in .atmos format can be used for punch-ins and metadata updates. Master files in other formats can only be used for playback. If punch-ins or metadata updates are required on a master in IMF IAB .mxf, or ADM BWF .wav format, these files must first be converted to .atmos using the Dolby Atmos Conversion Tool.
To write updated program metadata, or to perform punch-ins on a .atmos master file, the master file must be unlocked. A lock status icon is displayed in the master file section of the Renderer’s main window, indicating the file’s current status.
An .atmos master file that is newly created will be unlocked by default, while a master file that has been opened will be locked by default.
The locked or unlocked state is illustrated in the status bar:
To unlock a master, do the following:
- Click the master file reveal arrow (located at the right edge of the main window header).
- In the resulting pop-up window, click the master file lock switch to toggle it to the unlocked position.
