Exercise Objectives:
This exercise is designed to reinforce concepts covered in the first 6 modules of the training. The objective is to open a pre-mixed project in Logic, set up the Renderer based on that project, then create and record a Dolby Atmos Master.
Note: With the release of Logic Pro v10.7, Logic now supports a fully-integrated Dolby Atmos workflow. This workflow is covered in Module 5.10 as well as Logic Pro Exercise 1a. For more information on the new features and how to use the new Dolby Atmos tools within Logic, check out the new Quick Start video and the Logic Pro section of the Knowledge Base.
Dolby Atmos Renderer:
- Configure the Renderer as per Exercise 1
Logic Pro:
- Close any open Logic project
- Open the pre-mixed project and ensure that you are in the arrangement view
- There are 2 pre-mixed projects in the Sessions folder of the exercise content (labeled as Mixed); either will work for this exercise. The timecode values and screenshots below reference the 95BPM project.
- Push play in Logic and navigate to the Renderer to verify that there is communication with the Renderer and LTC sync
- Ensure that the position display is set to Time
- Move the cursor to beginning and end of the audio in the timeline to determine the in/out points to use in the Renderer. Use the Output field of the Dolby LTC Generator for these values.
(00:00:05:01 for the in point of the 95BPM project)
(00:01:29:16 for the out point of the 95BPM project)
- In the mixer view, make a note of the tracks, clips, and their corresponding object assignments – these will be used in the Input Description window of the Renderer
Dolby Atmos Renderer:
- Set up your input configuration:
- Open the Input Configuration window (Window > Input Configuration or Cmd+I)
- Click Groups to open the Groups dialog
- Add some custom group names that you will assign to objects (such as drums, bass, synth, vox)
- Click Close
- For each input, use the clip names from the Logic project to fill in the Description field, and assign to the groups you created
- Click Accept to save the input configuration
- Create a New Master File (File > New Master File or Cmd+N)
- Choose a Directory and filename
- Enable Record In/Out and set the In/Out to the time noted in your Logic project
- Arm Record
Logic Pro:
- Start playback from the beginning of the timeline (timecode start)
- Navigate to the Renderer to verify that the recording has started
- When playback has finished, press stop in Logic
Dolby Atmos Renderer:
- Once the Record Out timecode is passed, the Renderer will finalize the master file
- QC the recorded master:
- Disable sync in the Renderer
- Verify Input/Master switch is set to Master
- Click on the stop button to move to the start of the Master file
- Push play and listen to the entire Master file
- Open a finder window and navigate to the Master file. There should be a folder with a .atmos, .atmos.audio, and .atmos.metadata file
