Topics covered in this article:
- Common Dolby Vision Master delivery formats
- Quality Control recommendations
- Metafier
Once the Dolby Vision content has been output, rendered, or exported from the color correction system, the deliverables must be checked and validated before they can be delivered to the studio that owns or commissions the project.
The most popular ways to deliver a Dolby Vision Master are as follows:
- 16bit Tiff image sequence + Dolby Vision XML
- ProRes 4444 XQ + Dolby Vision XML
- Dolby Vision MXF mezzanine
- Dolby Vision IMF mezzanine
So, from a QC (Quality Check/Control) perspective, we recommend you check your deliverables before sending them to the studio or the client.
With Dolby Vision deliverables it is important to check:
- The metadata (XML)
- The pairing and compatibility of the HDR master image and the accompanying metadata
- The mapping of the HDR master image using the accompanying metadata
Checking Dolby Vision Metadata (XML)
Dolby Vision Metadata in an XML file can be checked or validated using Metafier, which is part of the Dolby Vision Professional tools. Metafier is a command line tool that can be run on a Linux, Mac, or Windows platform. Metafier can be used to check Dolby Vision XMLs and to modify or edit them.
A Dolby Vision XML can be validated by Metafier using the following commands,
Linux/Mac ./metafier --validate <filename.xml>
Windows metafier.exe --validate <filename.xml>
An additional command --with-lift can be added to check for shots having positive lift trims applied. It is recommended to not use positive lift trims on letterboxed content, during the Dolby Vision trims.

Metafier generates a validation report, which is a summary of the information that is stored in the XML. It also checks the XML for possible errors and entries or values that may result in errors during mapping.
